Fika is a community and responsive web application I built with 2 friends in New York. When the pandemic hit and everyone was forced to work from home, it became more difficult to connect with others. We wanted to create a way for creatives to easily collaborate over a ritual that we frequent when networking - coffee. Coffee is just the spark to collaborations, design gigs, mentorship and more.
User Research
Learning about each prescriber’s workflow, I used the insights to inform the start of designing a full product, encompassing settings, searching for a patient, and prescribing medications easily.
I collaborated with the CTO and CEOs of Honeybee Health to design Nectar, an in-house e-prescription tool addressing stringent abortion medication laws and data privacy issues with third-party tools like SureScripts. As the lead designer at Honeybee Health, I delved into a low-fidelity ideation phase, thinking through the information architecture and key elements of the tool, and synthesizing some of the research into an actionable product experience.
Background

Prescriber Insights from Interview sessions
Conducting research sessions with six providers and synthesizing insights, I identified key behaviors and pain points, translating them into actionable design opportunities and requirements for Nectar’s MVP. Through this process, I discovered that providers often distinguish between prescribing medications for patients under and over 8 weeks of gestation—an insight that revealed a unique opportunity to optimize the e-prescription workflow for their specific needs.
The prescribers we spoke with were very impressed with our existing partner's dashboard product and wanted an experience that encompassed all functionalities of e-prescription and EHR in Nectar.
Designing Nectar
After understanding key data elements, I developed an information architecture that would inform the e-prescription tool. Thinking about all the attributes related to a patient, prescribing medications, and settings was fundamental to designing the MVP experience. I decided to maintain the visual style of the Honeybee partners dashboard, to ensure providers can intuitively navigate the existing product experience while prescribing medications. Throughout the process, I considered various design elements for selecting a bundle and allowing doctors to add multiple medications to an order.
An improved experience for doctors prescribing bundle medications from adding medications to sending orders to pharmacies

Allowing prescribers to globally edit favorite medications, bundle medications, and provider information easily
I also contributed to the development of the design system. Building out the components enabled quicker development of the MVP experience by the engineering team.
Building a scalable design system

Designing the e-prescription tool prepared Honeybee Health for Series B funding, expanding from B2C to B2B solutions. Once launched, the experience would result in:
Improved efficiency in prescribing medications
Enhanced patient privacy

Learnings
It was rewarding to design a 0-1 platform for providers to easily prescribe medications. From leading the design process to making decisions about interaction patterns and components, I’m grateful to have designed Nectar, building providers’ trust with Honeybee Health. I learned about iteratively designing a product 0-1 with a suite of different features, designing in a regulated healthcare environment.
